A rural-urban Melbourne suburb, Sydney’s bustling CBD and a far north Queensland city – there have been a few surprise postcodes emerge as Australia’s lottery hot spots for 2020.
The Lott, together with Lotterywest, crunched the data to reveal the postcodes, states and regions home to the most division one wins across all lottery games.
The winning areas are revealed ahead of the upcoming $30 million megadraw on January 2, 2021.
WINNING POSTCODES
In Victoria, the postcode of 3337 for Melton sold four division one winning entries totalling more than $10.4 million.
In New South Wales and the ACT, the Sydney CBD postcode of 2000 sold the most division one winning entries in the state, with three totalling more than $5.4 million.
Queensland crowned a new winning postcode for this year, with 4870 for Cairns selling six division one winning entries collectively worth more than $6.24 million.
In South Australia, there were five postcodes that sold two division one winning entries. Of these five, the postcode of 5000 for the Adelaide CBD sold the entries that scored the largest amount of prize money – more than $3.27 million.
In Tasmania, the Devonport postcode of 7310 sold the Apple Isle’s largest prize worth $2 million.

In the top-end, the postcode of 0860 for Tennant Creek delivered the Northern Territory’s largest prize of $4.8 million.
In Western Australia, the postcodes of 6062 for Morley and 6210 for Mandurah both sold five division one winning entries totalling over $6.45 million and $3.42 million respectively.
“Some players flock to hot spots for their entries in the hopes it scores them a major prize, while others avoid them in the hope lottery lightning will strike elsewhere. Regardless, there is one thing that is guaranteed – you can’t win if you don’t have an entry,” The Lott’s spokesperson Bronwyn Spencer said.

NEW YEAR MEGADRAW
Ms Spencer said 2020’s hot spots would soon have a chance to cement their reputations as a winning postcode or region.
“We’re kicking off the New Year with a bang thanks to Saturday Lotto’s $30 million megadraw on Saturday, January 2, 2021,” she said.
“It will be interesting to see if division one wins from this draw – the biggest Saturday Lotto draw of the year – fall in any of 2020’s hot spots.
“While lottery wins can land anywhere, from time to time we see pockets of wins in the same region or postcode emerge.

Ms Spencer said only time would tell if the 2020 lottery hot spots continued to deliver.
“It’s less than four weeks until Saturday Lotto’s biggest annual draw, so we recommend players get in early and grab an entry for their chance to start 2021 as a division one winner,” she said.
Meanwhile, this Thursday’s Powerball is drawing in a $20 million jackpot while tonight’s Oz Lotto has reset to $2 million.

BILLIONS IN PRIZE MONEY
In the 12 months ending November 30, 2020, there were 477 division one winning entries held by lottery players across the country that delivered more than $1.22 billion in division one prize money.
Victoria had a rollercoaster year with lockdowns, but the state managed to finish on a high, taking out the top spot for the most major prizes for the fifth year in a row with 134 division one winning entries scoring over $365 million in prize money.

While Queensland took out the State of Origin trophy this year, New South Wales and the ACT have bragging rights for the second-highest amount of division one wins with 107, compared to the Sunshine State’s 104.
Players in New South Wales and the ACT can also boast about the largest amount of division one prize money with over $420 million.
It doesn’t stop there for New South Wales and the ACT as they also take out the top spot for creating the most millionaires with 79, followed closely by Victoria with 65 and Queensland with 54.
